Protesting Tips
- Write an emergency contact on your arm before protesting. Local bail fund and pro-bono numbers are also helpful to have on hand.

- Wear safety goggles to protests! I’ve seen some people suggest swim goggles too.
- Wear dark clothes to avoid standing out in crowds and cover any identifiable tattoos. Also tie long hair up to avoid it being used against you.
- Wear suitable closed toed shoes, many people suggest boots and heat resistant gloves may come in handy.
- Important things to bring:
- Water: Protests can go on for long periods of time so it is important to come equipped. Water can also be used to clean wounds and rinse eyes.
- Snacks
- A Power Bank
- Bandaids and First Aid Supplies
- Ear Plugs
- A Washcloth
- Cash and your ID can come in handy. It is especially important to bring cash instead of using your debit or credit cards as it helps the authorities track your movements.
- Please wear masks or bandanas to protests, especially during this period of global illness. They can also help to cover up facial features! It is helpful to have extras on hand in case you contact tear gas.
- Wear contact lenses if possible, they are not good to have if you are pepper sprayed, etc.
- Bring anything you wouldn’t want to be arrested with
- Bring your cell phone without turning off Face/Touch ID in advance, going on airplane mode, and disabling data.
- Know your rights in advance! Your rights vary depending on where you live in the world and youth in particular may have important rights you don’t already know of.
- Be aware of the presence of undercover cops! They can be identified by:
- Possible body armour under street clothes
- **Colour of the day armbands
- Handcuffs in pockets
- Issued boots

- What to do if ICE comes to your door
- Do not open doors: ICE cannot come in without a signed warrant by a criminal court judge. They can only come in if you let them in.
- Remain silent: ICE can use anything you say against you in your immigration case so claim your right to remain silent (“I plead the fifth amendment and choose to remain silent”)
- Do not sign: Don’t sign anything ICE gives you without talking to an attorney
- Report and Record: Take pictures and video unless you’re on federal government property. Take notes of badge numbers, number of agents, time, type of car, and exactly what happened (UWD hotline 1-844-363-1423)
- Fight back: Get a trustworthy attorney to explore all options to fight your case. If detained, you may be able to get bail - don’t give up hope! Join your local team to defend yourself from enforcement!
